其前身是包括英国19世纪最伟大的首相威廉·格莱斯在内的当地名流创立的所教师培训学院。切斯特大学既具有悠久的历史，也富于现代化的创新精神。学校的另一个校友沃灵顿拥有悠久的历史和多处文化遗迹。
切斯特大学共设有7个学院：艺术与媒体学院；人文学院；应用与卫生科学学院；社会科学学院；卫生与社会保健学院；教育学院；商务与管理和法学院。注册学生1万名。所有学院都开设了本科课程，讲授式研究生课程和研究式研究生学位课程。学校由英格兰高等教育拨款委员会（HEFCE）提供经费，在校外各项机构对学校所做的评估中都取得了“优秀”的评价。因此，学校高质量的教学水平在英国享有盛誉。
